Whooper Swan

Distinguished from the Mute Swan by their distinctive yellow-and-black beak pattern and their resonant, bugling calls that echo across frozen lakes, Whooper Swans form lifelong pair bonds and return faithfully to the same breeding territories year after year.

In Finland, the Whooper Swan population has recovered remarkably from near-extinction in the early 20th century, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. Today, approximately 8,000–10,000 breeding pairs nest across Finnish wetlands and lakes.
